The 6th floor of the Subaru Headquarters features a rooftop described as “Asia´s first multi-terrain test track, where customers can witness and feel Subaru´s AWD technology in action”. There are three different areas within the roof design, each representing a distinctive landscape, i. e. a tropical rainforest, a rock garden and a desert. Challenging obstacles were built along the circuit, such as humps, rocks, a sand trail and even a waterfall. The all-wheel drive test track was installed on top of the heavy duty drainage element Elastodrain® EL 202, which offers excellent protection to the waterproofing membrane and even caters for wild cornering. Besides, it provides for perfect drainage, most important during heavy tropical rain.

Challenging obstacles were built along the circuit, such as humps and rocks.
Even a waterfall was integrated within the circuit.
Local palm trees were planted in a 1.20 m deep substrate layer.

The “Community Hospital Esslingen” is a modern hospital for central health supply. Underneath the access to the hospital and the main entrance there are further medical facilities as well as a corridor to the central kitchen. This area has been completely redesigned in 2003 with an intensive green roof area. In order to implement the new access road and the adjacent walkways with a thin build up, the extremely strong drainage element Elastodrain® EL 202 was used. The planting beds were implemented with the system build-up “Perennial Garden” on the drainage element Floradrain® FD 40-E. A drip irrigation supplies the vegetation with water.

Planting beds, a water feature as well as walkways and driveways were installed on top of the hospitals basement.
A small park was created in front of the main entrance to the hospital.

Due to topographical reasons the hotel access was only possible crossing the top of a two story deep underground garage. This was a technical challenge for the engineers of the ZinCo technical department but also for the contractors Vallimper and Jardinatura. A sufficiently dimensioned base layer had to be created for the heavy load traffic whilst integrating the green areas with the high palm trees. The palm species “Howea forsteriana” grows up to 50 ft. (15 m) in height. The remaining green roof area consists of lawn which is irrigated by an automatic system.

Driveways on Roofs and Plaza Decks – Heavy Duty Build-up Systems to Support High Loads

General Information Regarding Driveways on Rooftops

Loads: Driveways on rooftops require both a stable construction and adequate load-bearing capacity. As wheel loads lead to enormous concentrated loads due to their relatively small surface area, sufficient load distribution has to be available. This can be achieved through the use of load-distributing plates or through sufficiently thick layers of growing medium.

Edging: Steering, breaking and accelerating on driveways can lead to enormous horizontal forces being created. In order to direct these forces away from the roof’s waterproofing, measures such as laying slip sheets may be required. The forces are then transferred into stable edging.

Pavement: The stone thickness has to be properly calculated and should be selected in accordance with the loads. Lesser loads (e.g. cars only), do not call for the paving to be as strong as if used with higher loads. When both car and truck traffic occur, the rolling structural loads can lead to distortions. Selecting a larger stone thickness will result in a larger bearing surface between the stones, which will do more to counteract distortions.
