Charlesview Residences, a mixed-use development in Boston’s Allston-Brighton, was designed to a LEED® Silver certifiable standard by CBT Architects and connected to the surrounding neighborhood by new streets and parks. It includes approx. 25,000 sq. ft. (2,250 m²) of space for commercial and community uses and underground parking for 243 vehicles. The green roof includes planted areas, walkways and driveways and was thus realized best with the “ZinCo Recreational Park” system. The core element of this build-up is the drainage element Stabilodrain® SD 30, an extremely stable and trafficable drainage element suitable for the installation of both hardscapes and softscapes. It allows wheel loaders to drive on it, e.g. during the base layer installation. Stabilodrain® elements easily bear the weight of the growing media plus plants and ensure at the same time an unhindered drainage of surplus water.

The courtyard is designed to allow residents to stroll through.
The planting areas have been separated from the hardscape areas by low curbs on one side and by benches on the other side.
The courtyard has been very well received by the residents and the community at-large.

YPF S.A. (formerly Repsol) is the leading Energy Company in Argentina. Architect Cesar Pelli, known for designing some of the world ́s tallest buildings, initiated this incredible design described as two conjunct triangular towers with curved sides. This successful green roof project is ZinCo ́s first in South America. The platform of the building, which is located on an underground parking, was planted and paved using a system build-up with Floradrain® FD 40-E drainage element. A glazed corner balcony stretches from 27th to 33rd floor. Behind its facade, there is an arrangement of very large planter boxes using ZinCo green roof systems.

Lawn, shrubs and trees were planted on the underground car park.
A walkway between pillars divides the garden.
The circular water features break up the glass gravel area.
Several large Jacaranda trees add colour to the underground car park.

On the former US military territory in the Scharnhauser Park in Ostfildern, an ecologically exemplary and family-friendly housing estate was developed. On top of the parking garage one finds an unique combination of a modern living concept and an extraordinary experience of na-ture. Altogether the Scharnhauser Park was designed very child-friendly. There is a playground in the “Blue Garden”, part of which is a little artificial creek that collects rainwater and flows into a small pond serving as a cistern. Floradrain® FD 60 elements have been installed as they are suitable as a sub-construction for all kinds of ambitious intensive green roofs.

A man-made creek flows into this pond.
A playground with a sandbox is part of the “Blue Garden”.
Children love to play at the artificial creek.
The planted trees bring natural elements and wildlife habitats.

In 2008 the new building of the WGV-Insurance has been opened in Stuttgart. Since then customers and employees of the WGV have enjoyed the beautiful courtyards which contribute to a good working environment. The approx. 3.6 ft. (1.1 m) high, built-in planters have been provided with an automatic irrigation system with the irrigation pipes installed below the elevated concrete slabs. The four courtyards have been planted with a total of 58 small crowned trees. In addition, several extensive green roof areas of approx. 21,600 sq. ft. (2,000 m²) total were installed to improve the Stuttgart climate.

The ZinCo System Build-Up “Recreational Park” turns Underground Garages into Parks

The “Roof Garden” System can also be installed on underground garage decks. Yet, due to the good accessibility and high load bearing capacity of the roof and building construction, it is more practical to use a stable and safe G�� system allowing for vehicular access. This is very useful especially when applying the growing media.

The heavy duty ZinCo Stabilodrain® SD 30 was specifically engineered to be applied on the roof of underground parking garages. It is designed to withstand heavy loads and dynamic forces and is a perfect base for a variety of walkways and driveways. Numerous possibilities exist and include anything from car parks, fire access roads, playgrounds to reinforced lawn and stone paving.

Stabilodrain® SD 30 drainage elements are extremely stable and trafficable, suitable for walkways and car traffic and, when infilled, even for wheel loader traffic during installation. At the same time, they ensure a safe drainage of any excess water. The system “Recreational Park” offers a wide variety of possibilities for planting and design.
