In 2003, a team consisting of the landscape architect James Corner with his office Field Operations, the architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and the plant specialist Piet Oudolf won the international ideas contest “Designing the High Line”. Their concept included ponds and benches. Viewpoints should allow splendid views of the Hudson River, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Staircases and elevators - similar to those of interurban railway stations - were planned in regular distances. It was the planner’s objective to preserve the natural flora and wilderness which had developed over the years on the former freight train line. The rails should remain visible in remembrance of the historical origin. In the meantime 210 plant species, including numerous shrubs and trees, thrive in a height of 17–30 ft. (5–9 m) and a substrate depth of about 18 in. (450 mm).

The section 2 contains also a lawn which can be used for sunbathing.
Staircases and elevators were planned in regular distances.
The rails should remain visible in remembrance of the historical origin.
Viewpoints and benches should allow splendid views.
The concept also included water features.

In order to blend in the new 107,700 sq. ft. (10,000 m²) MAG galleries shopping development with the historic town of Geislingen, a design competition was commissioned. The winning design provides the people of Geislingen with a new public recreational area, with easy access via lifts, stairs, footbridges and ramps. The intensive green roof vegetation (seeded lawn, perennials, shrubs and trees) developed very quickly due to the efficiency of the irrigation system. In the meantime, the climbing plants covered the vertical lattices and fences which separate the intensive areas from the extensive. The extensive vegetation (applied by hydroseeding) will achieve 60 % ground coverage after two growing cycles.

The recreational area is easy accessable via lifts, stairs, footbridges and ramps
Playing facilities, a basketball court and park benches invite for a stay.

An existing roof terrace of a private property in the Peristeri district of Athens was redesigned into a sophisticated roof garden. Such a green oasis has several advantages. On the one hand, the roof garden offers variety, is a great benefit to the eye and is an oasis of nature in the middle of the city. On the other hand, the “green roof” has a cooling effect. The drainage element Floradrain® FD 40-E was used as base which drains away excess water from the roof during territorial rains. An integrated automatic drip irrigation system in the planting beds ensures adequate water supply for the plants. In addition the lawn area is sprinkled time by time. The green roof area as such provides balanced temperatures in both summer and winter times.

A metal profile separates the terrace from the rest of the roof.
The roof garden is a green island in the densely built urban landscape.

Roof Garden – The Ideal Multifunctional Build-up for Soft and Hard Landscaping on Rooftops

“Roof Garden” is a multifunctional G�� system build-up with high water storage. Depending on the depth of growing medium, lawn, perennials, shrubs or small trees can be planted. This build-up allows for a variety of design concepts, even water features can be designed. Various combinations are possible, e.g. with walkways, patios, playgrounds or even driveways. Concrete foundations for kerbs, walls or furnishings without penetrating the waterproofing and unhindered drainage underneath the Floradrain® FD 60 neo are possible.

Within the Roof Garden, it is useful to store as much rainwater as possible to reduce the need for additional watering. The Floradrain® FD 60 neo drainage element allows very high water retention suitable for all aspects of diverse roof gardens. The water is stored across the roof area and reaches the plants by capillary action and diffusion. Water storage and irrigation from underneath, a so-called dam up irrigation can also be easily achieved by installing roof dam elements above the roof outlets. A roof laid at 0° fall is required to include this feature, along with a suitable waterproofing membrane. Inspection chambers allow for examination and maintenance of the roof dam elements at any time. With automatic irrigation machines, the water level of the dam up irrigation can be maintained even in periods of drought.
