Avigilon, Canadian provider of video surveillance software and equipment and security solutions, opened a new research and development centre in Somerville, located near Boston’s Technology Hub in 2016. The building is situated amidst an award-winning mixed-use area on the Mystic River and offers the occupants great views of the waterfront. Nine separate garden areas have been realised and planted with different grasses and perennials giving the terraces a special charm and a light and breezy ambience. Built-on-site seatwalls capped with float-ing cedar slats create natural gathering spaces on the roof, and integrated light-ing provides an inviting ambience day or night.

The rooftop offers spectacular views of the Mystic River.
Nine separate garden areas have been realised.
Various grasses give the terraces a light and breezy ambience.
Colourful perennials add vibrancy.
Floradrain® FD 40-E ensures a safe drainage of excess water under the elements to the roof drains.
Seatwalls create natural gathering spaces on the roof.
Built-on-site seatwalls are capped with floating cedar slats.
Floradrain® FD 40-E was used as a permanent formwork for the curb and seatwalls.

The Kanyon Shopping Centre, perfectly located in the business district of the Taksim area in Istanbul, was opened in May 2006 and since then is an attraction for all fans of shopping, gourmet and life-style. As the first “Open Air Mall” in Europe the Kanyon Levent offers a pleasant atmosphere around the four floors, which are explored on a pedestrian passage winding its way through like a “Canyon”. For the very attractive design of the creatively curved green roof a modified system build up “Perennial Garden” was chosen. This build up easily allowed the desired semi-intensive green roof with its individual character.

The foundation of today’s public radio broadcaster “Deutschlandradio Köln” was a special chapter in the German broad-casting history. In 1994 three formerly independent broadcasting stations were united to the German international broad-caster “Deutschlandradio”. The rooftop of the Deutschlandradio”-building was vegetated extensively. The system build-up “Ornamental Sedum“ with the proven drainage element Floradrain® FD 25-E was perfectly suitable for this purpose. For the two courtyards the system build-up “Perennial Garden” was used including the drainage element Floradrain® FD 40-E. Apart from ground covering perennials the plant community “Perennial Garden“ includes accents such as fragrant herbs as and small shrubs like thyme, oregano and lavender.

The large courtyard was provided with a wooden deck and seating-accommodations for the employees.
Art objects are surrounded by lavender and shrubs.
Mixing various walkway materials adds contrast.
The rooftop was vegetated extensively.

G�� System “Perennial Garden” – The Ideal System Build-up for Blooming Perennials and Aromatic Shrubs

“Perennial Garden” is a simple intensive G�� system and allows for the inclusion of various perennials and small shrubs in the plant selection. Compared to extensive G��s, the larger capacity of the drainage layer and the thicker layer of growing medium facilitate this broader plant palette.

Apart from low-growing Sedum species, the plant community “Perennial Garden” also contains fragrant drought resistant herbs and small shrubs, like thyme, oregano, lavender and ornamental grasses, which can be completed by colorfully flowering species using a special planting design.

For this semi-intensive G��, the ZinCo Floradrain® FD 40-E water retaining- and drainage element is combined with the ZinCo “Zincoblend I” growing medium specifically developed for this plant community, to create the right growing conditions for the various species of this type of G��.

By shaping the growing medium, it is possible to create a varied appearance. Various designs and combinations with walkways and patios are also possible. The "Perennial Garden" system requires only moderate care and maintenance. During dry season additional irrigation may be necessary.
