In 2011, the approximately 54 acres large VanDusen Botanical Garden, existing since the 1970s, was provided with a new representative visitor center in the size of approximately 20,000 sq. ft. (1,800 m²). The peculiarity of the design is the roof shape, imitating the leaves of an orchid flower. The flower stem is represented by the central atrium. The idea for this roof shape was developed by the famous landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, known for the perfect integration of her landscaping into the overall architectural concept. Due to the varying inclinations and curvatures of the roof surface three different systems were applied: on the flat areas a build-up based on Floradrain® FD 40-E, on the sloped roof areas a build-up with Floraset® FS 75 and on the steep roof areas a build-up with Georaster®.

The building was inspired by natural forms, imitating an orchid flower.
The stem of the orchid flower is represented by the central atrium.
Due to varying slopes several kinds of ZinCo system build-ups were applied.
Georaster® elements were installed in the steep-pitched areas.
The beautifully flowering green roof attracts bees and other pollinating insects.
The building uses on-site renewable sources to achieve net-zero energy.

This high end residential green roof is broken up into three separate areas. The roofs are all barrel shaped with slopes in excess of 30 degrees. There is a custom fabricated steel parapet wall that encloses the entire green roof build-up. On the steepest slopes (the bottom of the roof edges) the parapet wall is perforated with 1” (25.4 mm) slots that feed to an internal gutter system to insure consistent drainage away from the exterior walls.The ZinCo Georaster® system stabilizes 5” (127 mm) of extensive growing media on the steepest sections of the roof and rolls of Floradrain® FD 40-R were used on the “top of the roof barrels” where stabilization was less important, but water retention was critical. The roof utilized pre-cultivated sedum mats that provided nearly 100 % coverage on the day of installation and will continue to flourish with a variety of colors as the roof ages.

In the steeper areas the Georaster®-elements have been placed on the Water Retention Mat WSM 150, starting from below.
In the flatter areas above the Georaster®-elements Floradrain® FD 40-R have been installed.
In order to obtain a complete green coverage immediately pre-cultivated vegetation mats have been applied on the growing media.

The new fire station is located to the south of the new outdoor swimming pool, on the site of the former pool. The green roof flows wave-like upwards to the road above. As a result the building is incorporated esthetically into the mountainside. An extensive green roof was installed along with Georaster® elements fitted from the bottom upwards. Precultivated vegetation mats, each 22 sq. ft. (2 m²) in size, were placed above the growing media for quick surface coverage and immediate protection against erosion. Flat-plate solar collectors were fitted along parts of the roof ridge in order to generate warm water for the adjacent outdoor swimming pool.

Pre-cultivated vegetation mats offered immediate ground coverage.
The visitors of the outdoor swimming pool can enjoy a beautiful view onto the green roof.
The green roof was installed with Georaster®elements to transfer shear forces.
The dense flowering carpet attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects.
The building merges beautifully into the surrounding mountainside.
Solar collectors were fitted along parts of the roof in order to generate warm water for the adjacent outdoor swimming pool.

The system build-up “Sloped Sedum”, based on the ZinCo Georaster® elements, enables the installation of G��s with slopes exceeding 20° and up to 35°. Above 35° special solutions can be designed by the ZinCo engineers.

The Georaster® elements are made of recycled polyethylene (HD-PE) and interlock without requiring tools, creating a stable structure. This structure is safely accessible and can be infilled with growing medium. The Georaster® elements cater for plenty of space for the plant root systems to establish and develop. The plant selection has to be well adapted to the extreme conditions of a sloped roof, where the solar radiation is the highest on the south facing roof side and the water run-off is much faster compared to a flat roof. The irrigation should be planned for, even if it is only needed in times of drought. It can avoid gaps in the vegetation coverage, which would lead to erosion. A transfer of existing shear forces into stable eaves and into additional shear barriers is necessary.

Georaster® elements can also be installed under reinforced lawns, footway constructions, in slope protection, etc.
