(1,800 m²). The peculiarity of the design is the roof shape, imitating the leaves of an orchid flower. The flower stem is represented by the central atrium. The idea for this roof shape was developed by the famous landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, known for the perfect integration of her landscaping into the overall architectural concept. The roofs are all barrel shaped with slopes in excess of 30 degrees. There is a custom fabricated steel parapet wall that encloses the entire green roof build-up. On the steepest slopes (the bottom of the roof edges) the parapet wall is perforated with 1” (25.4 mm) slots that feed to an internal gutter system to insure consistent drainage away from the exterior walls.The ZinCo Georaster® system stabilizes 5” (127 mm) of extensive growing media on the steepest sections of the roof and rolls of Floradrain® FD 40-R were used on the “top of the roof barrels” where stabilization was less important, but water retention was critical. Above 35° special solutions can be designed by the ZinCo engineers.</p> <p>The <strong>Georaster®</strong> elements are made of recycled polyethylene (HD-PE) and interlock without requiring tools, creating a stable structure. This structure is safely accessible and can be infilled with growing medium. The Georaster® elements cater for plenty of space for the plant root systems to establish and develop. The plant selection has to be well adapted to the extreme conditions of a sloped roof, where the solar radiation is the highest on the south facing roof side and the water run-off is much faster compared to a flat roof. The irrigation should be planned for, even if it is only needed in times of drought. It can avoid gaps in the vegetation coverage, which would lead to erosion.
