The Milstein Hall School of Architecture at Cornell University is home to a number of sustainable design features. The LEED Gold certified building utilized sophisticated mechanical systems and a host of recycled building materials. The signature of the building was the ZinCo USA Sedum Carpet System that was installed among an intricate diamond shaped pattern of rooftop skylights. The green roof system has 2.5” (63.5 mm) of Zincoblend extensive growing media to support the more than 90,000 native plug plants that were used to vegetate the system. The TPO waterproofing membrane had root resistant qualities that allowed the ZinCo Protection Mat SSM 45 to lay directly on top of the membrane. Because Ithaca, NY was a borderline hardiness zone for sedum vitality, a drip line irrigation system was installed to counterbalance the extreme high and low weather patterns inherent to central NY state.

The numerous skylights provide the rooms below with sufficient light.
The roof has been planted with two different species of Sedum, as specified by the architect.

The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, is located in one of the most beautiful geographic locations in the Northeast. The Hotchkiss School, an independent boarding school for 598 students from all over the US, was founded in 1981. Installed in July, 2012, the green roof of the school’s new Biomass Treatment Center is an exciting addition to an already beautiful campus. The Biomass Treatment Center is a LEED Gold certified building, that provides heating for the Hotchkiss School's campus buildings. According to the architect, the facility is part of Hotchkiss commitment to becoming a CO₂-neutral campus by 2020. The building merges with the surrounding landscape in an excellent way, due to the low profile and an undulating sloped green roof.

Just three months after completion the plants already had thriven splendidly.
Due to the use of precultivated Sedum mats, the roof was covered by vegetation quickly.

The office building designed by Luis Corvalan and A4 Architects has 23 floors and is the first and only project of this scale as part of the urban renewal of Santiago de Chile. Special emphasis in the design of the new district “Nueva las Condes” was given to its integration into the environ-ment. The buildings form a large place, called “La Plaza de la Palabra”. This “Place of the Word” again forms the central point of the “Gran Boulevard Peatonal”, a large pedestrian zone, which extends between the other buildings under construction. The generously ornamentally designed green roof is located on a lower connecting building and is therefore clearly visible from the office towers.

The entire surface beneath is covered with Floradrain® elements.
The growing media and the gravel are distributed evenly all over the roof surface.
The plants form a dense carpet of leaves in various shapes and colours.

To enhance the visual appearance of the sur-rounding roof areas and therefore to improve the view from the waiting hall, the operator of the Ibiza Airport decided for a green roof. However, a weight restriction of approx. 20 lbs/sq. ft. (95 kg/m²) needed to be considered. Therefore the installers were forced to use a substrate that would guarantee a specific weight of only 53 lbs/cft. (850 kg/m³) but at the same time would provide an adequate nutrient supply. The growing media that was offered by the ZinCo associ-ated company Cubiertas Ecológicas S.L., met all these conditions. To ensure a balanced water and air supply drainage elements of the type Floradrain® FD 40-E were applied on the entire roof area before. The photographs prove the success of the works. Shortly after the completion of the landscaping works the vege-tation shows a covering of almost 100% - also due to the integrated drip irrigation.

Extensive G�� “Sedum Carpet” – The Proven Ecological Protective Layer

The “Sedum Carpet” is a standard build-up for extensive G��s. It is a shallow and lightweight G�� type with ground-covering plants, that requires little maintenance.

Floradrain® FD 25-E is the appropriate drainage and waterstorage element for this system. It has the necessary compressive strength, a low profile height, little weight and is walkable. Proven Sedum species, in combination with the adapted growing medium and system build-up, guarantee a durable G��. The growing medium “Zincoblend E” is particularly suitable for extensive G��s as well as the plant community “Sedum Carpet”, containing various low-growing Sedum species that are wind and frost-resistant.

The main blooming time is early summer with yellow, red and white flowers dominating. During the year, “Sedum Carpet” is represented in various shades of green. Red shades show particularly in autumn and are a nice change in the G��´s appearance.
